"Still Waiting for Justice for Breonna Taylor," is one of DC based artist, Samantha Viotty's most recent collage illustrations. This piece was created in a reaction of the current protests against police brutality. The work is to bring awareness to the injustice of the police who shot Breonna Taylor and the fact that they are still walking free. Her work constantly recreates found images digitally and frames them into a layered discussion of intersectionality. Without the context of facial features the portrait allows for the viewer to place their own identity on the piece. Her works while relate to all women they act as a vessel for her exploration into her own black female identify. This piece is part of our Fall 2020 group exhibition, "Women (Un)Silenced: A Survey of Contemporary Black Artists."
Samantha Viotty is a Washington D.C. based digital illustrator who focuses on identity and social issues in her work. Viotty’s recent illustration, Still Waiting for Justice for Breonna Taylor, places Breonna Taylor, a Black woman shot in her home by police, in a celestial setting, but suspended, and in limbo as her killers have yet been brought to justice. The imagery is serene, but the title of the work confronts the viewer, giving an immortal voice to a woman who has been eternally silenced.
